Since the brand was established in 2009, YUIMA NAKAZATO has continued to demonstrate originality by sincerely facing the “now”, where tradition and innovation in fashion, East and West, and the past and future of humanity intersect. Since 2016, as the only Japanese fashion brand to continue to present its work at Paris Haute Couture Week, YUIMA NAKAZATO has been engaging the aesthetic sensibilities and intellect of people around the world, and reconciling all kinds of opposing concepts in the name of “fashion”.
The “YUIMA NAKAZATO Exhibition: Can the story of the universe and giant catfish told by the desert be housed in clothing?” is made up of two parts, with the main focus on the world of the ‘FADE’ collection, and an introduction to the collections ‘UTAKATA’ and ‘UNVEIL’. The very act of trying to reconcile two seemingly irreconcilable concepts beauty and sustainability is what defines
YUIMA NAKAZATO.
UTAKATA is a collection officially linked to Mozart’s opera IDOMENEO. Nakazato was impressed by the beauty of the armor worn by ancient Greek warriors, and presented UTAKATA by superimposing armor and foam, expressing his opposition to “battle.” The collection also challenges the notion of “toxic masculinity.”
Furthermore, the first solo retrospective exhibition, “Beyond Couture”, that was held at the “Musée de la Mode et du Costume” in Calais, France, clearly demonstrated the unique position that YUIMA NAKAZATO has achieved in the fashion context.
Like UTAKATA, UNVEIL was born from a series of experiences related to the opera IDOMENEO, for which Nakazato Yuima was in charge of costumes. Nakazato took the concept of UTAKATA even further to resist the negative trends of the modern world, pursuing clothes in which “wearing clothes is an act of exposing yourself more vulnerable than being naked.” UNVEIL is a collection designed solely for
decorative purposes, stripping away all rational functionality from the tailored suit, which is the modern form of armor.
FADE is YUIMA NAKAZATO’s latest collection, marking a new chapter after 15 years. For this collection, Nakazato focused on the role of clothing as a medium for telling a story. FADE itself is a story that only Nakazato, who continues to collect all kinds of narratives, such as couture philosophy, cutting edge technology, and mythology, can spin. In addition, the regeneration of used clothing was carried out through can spin. In addition, the regeneration of used clothing was carried out through various trial and error with Epson’s technology, and after three years, it has reached the highest quality to date. FADE is a collection that promises that YUIMA NAKAZATO’s new challenges will be fruitful in terms of technology as well.
It is also worth noting that the aesthetic creation that enables YUIMA NAKAZATO to achieve the difficult task of balancing “beauty and sustainability” that we experience there is the result of a partnership with Seiko Epson Corporation. “We used the innovative synthetic protein fiber technology by Spiber Inc.”, incorporating the concept of “sustainability” into fashion design.
