YUIMA NAKAZATO is currently being exhibited at the Art Gallery of the Barbican Centre, London, alongside the works of Hussein Chalayan, Martin Margiela, Rick Owens, and Alexander McQueen.
In a dedicated section are 6 looks from our couture collections: INHERIT (S/S 2023) and FADE (S/S 2025) with clips from the documentary film “Dust to Dust”, which was the inspiration source of the INHERIT collection. It was here that Nakazato explored Kenya to find the final destination of discarded clothing. The production of this collection began when 150kg of used clothing was brought back to Japan from Africa. The type of clothing was generally very difficult to recycle for various reasons, but with Epson’s “Dry Fiber Technology (DFT)” we were able to defibrate these clothing, turn them into non-woven fabric sheets, and further recycle them into new garments.
We continue to use DFT in our collections, which can also be found in the FADE pieces. FADE was born from Yuima’s trip to the Sahara Desert, where through the mishaps he experienced during his travels, it crossed Nakazato’s mind that the desert might be foreshadowing the future of Tokyo. Seeing how today’s climate change fades and sometimes completely transforms our everyday environment, perhaps it would not be entirely fair to say that this is merely a flight of fancy.
