パリのオートクチュール・ウィークにて作品を発表し続ける日本唯一のファッション・ブランド YUIMA NAKAZATO は、お陰様で2024年で15周年を迎えることとなりました。同年には、フランスのカレー公立・レース・ファッション美術館での単独回顧展〈BEYOND COUTURE〉が開催され、世界的に大きな反響を呼びました。

本展は、フランスでの回顧展以降のブランドの新章を、コレクション発表直後から世界中に散らばってしまうアイテムを一堂に会し、皆様に直接ご覧いただく試みです。展示は大きく２つのセクションに分かれます。1つ目は、私が衣装デザインを担当したオペラ〈IDOMENEO〉からインスピレーションを得た2つのコレクション〈UTAKATA〉〈UNVEIL〉を回顧するところから始まり、2つ目には、パリのオートクチュール・ウィークで2025年1月に発表する最新のコレクション〈FADE〉と3つのコレクションを順番にご覧いただきます。

21世紀も四半期が過ぎようとしている現在、世界はデジタル化を遂げ、驚くべき速さで時間、空間、コンテクストが圧縮され続けています。その結果、日常のあらゆる局面において合理化が進み、わたしたちは、少しずつ雑事から解放され、新たなライフスタイルを手に入れました。

しかしその一方で、私がアフリカ・ケニアを旅した際に、不必要な衣服たちが地球上を覆い尽くしている情景を目の当たりにしたのです。肥大化し続ける大量生産と大量消費、そんな時代の中で、1点物の衣服をつくり続ける行為は、世の中の大きな流れに抗い、世界へ問いを表明することでもあるのです。

エキシビションの副題にある「砂漠が語る宇宙と巨大ナマズの物語は衣服に宿るか」という文章は、衣服は単に人間の身体を覆い保護するための機能として存在するのではなく、そこに潜む科学や神話など様々な物語に想いを馳せることで、衣服をまとう唯一の生物である人間という存在とは何かを浮かび上らせたいという考えから生まれました。

本展を通じて、衣服を「纏う」のではなく「読む」という向き合い方を体感することで、私たちが日々何気なく身につけている衣服への眼差しが少しでも変化する機会となりましたら幸いです。

As Japan’s only fashion brand to continuously present its works at Paris Haute Couture Week, YUIMA NAKAZATO proudly celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2024. That same year, the brand held its first solo retrospective exhibition, BEYOND COUTURE, at the Cité de la Dentelle et de la Mode (Museum of Lace and Fashion) in Calais, France, which received widespread international acclaim.

This exhibition marks the next chapter for the brand, bringing together pieces that would normally be dispersed around the world immediately after their debut, allowing visitors to experience them firsthand. The exhibition is divided into two main sections: The first revisits two collections—UTAKATA and UNVEIL—which draw inspiration from the opera IDOMENEO, for which I designed the costumes. The second section features FADE, the latest collection to be unveiled at Paris Haute Couture Week in January 2025. These three collections will be presented in succession, offering a unique insight into the evolution of YUIMA NAKAZATO.

As we approach a quarter of the 21st century, the world is undergoing rapid digitalization, continuously compressing time, space, and context at an astonishing speed. This has brought efficiency to every facet of life, gradually liberating us from mundane tasks and allowing us to embrace new lifestyles.

However, during my travels in Kenya, I was confronted with a stark reality: landscapes overwhelmed by discarded, unnecessary clothing. In an era of excessive mass production and consumption, the act of creating one-of-a-kind garments stands as both a form of resistance and a statement to the world.

The subtitle of this exhibition, "Pieces of planets abandoned in the desert and myth of the Namazu – Do you wear the tale of universe?", reflects my belief that clothing is more than just a functional object that protects the human body. By contemplating the scientific, mythical, and narrative dimensions embedded within garments, we can explore what it truly means to be human—the only species that adorns itself with clothing.

Through this exhibition, I hope visitors will experience a shift in perspective, seeing clothing not merely as something to "wear" but as something to "read." If this exhibition can provide even a small moment of transformation in the way we perceive the garments we wear every day, it would be deeply rewarding.
