I traveled to Sahara el Beyda, a white desert at a corner of the vast Sahara.
To think about the faraway memories that dwell in this planet.
In the expanse of geometrical urban landscapes, I stand atop the sight of rocks that take the shape of giant mushrooms.
Memories, dreams, reveries, and the real world fuse.
I become unsure of which reality I'm in.
When the sun sets, the White Desert transforms in an instant.
In darkness, the land of sand shifts into the shape of waves with gusts of wind, as if it was turning into liquid.
A giant creature is underground - once emerged, this became a persistent thought that refuses to leave my mind.
The long night ends, and the Sun starts to rise again.
Here, is the Tokyo from the future.

Paris, 29 January 2025—YUIMA NAKAZATO presented its latest couture collection, ‘FADE’. The collection ushers in a new era for YUIMA NAKAZATO, one in which the focus has shifted from technical aspects, such as the use of cutting-edge materials, towards storytelling, extending an invitation to another world. Yuima travels to a different region of the world to find inspiration for each collection. The route he chose this time was the White Desert National Park, known as “Sahara el Beyda”, located in the eastern part of the Sahara Desert, which once was the bottom of the sea. Standing in the midst of a large white chalk rock formation, created through tens of millions of years of erosion by wind and sand, Yuima witnessed a story of time spanning at a cosmic scale, beyond the lifespan of any one individual person. During the journey, his car lost its way in the desert in the middle of the night and continued to drive for hours without any signal or GPS. After being shaken for so long in the backseat and covered in dust that had seeped in through the gaps, Yuima's sentience leapt into an endless world of imagination. There, the ancient Japanese myth of the giant creature “Namazu” (catfish) that lives under the earth and was believed to be the cause of earthquakes came to his mind. The title of the work, “FADE”, means weathering. It is a word that describes the gradual disappearance of something, such as memories or materials. While lost in the desert, as all of his memories, visions, and reality disappeared and reappeared before his eyes, melting into one, it crossed Yuima’s mind that the desert might be foreshadowing the future of Tokyo. Seeing how today's climate change fades and sometimes completely transforms our everyday environment, perhaps it would not be entirely fair to say that this is merely a flight of fancy.

ここは、数千万年前は海の底だったと伝えられている。
私は、広大なサハラの一角にある白砂漠という場所を訪れていた。
この惑星に宿る、遥かなる記憶に想いを馳せたいと思ったのだ。
幾何学的な都市空間の中にいた私が、今は巨大キノコのような岩が乱立する景色の上に立っている。
記憶と夢と想像と現実と、様々な世界が脳内で混ざり合い、一体自分自身がいつどこにいるのかわからなくなる。
日が沈むと、白砂漠はその姿を一変させた。
暗闇の中、砂の大地は強風でゆらゆらとうねり、まるで液体のようにその姿を変化させていた。
地中に何か巨大な生き物がいる。一度その想像をするとしつこく頭から離れない。
長い夜は明け、再び太陽が昇り始める。
ここは、未来の東京。

FADEは、2025年1月に発表された、YUIMA NAKAZATOの最新クチュール・コレクションである。衣服を形作る素材や技術的な側面に重きを置いてきたこれまでのシーズンから、より物語や世界観を構築していくことにフォーカスした、YUIMA NAKAZATOの新章のスタートに相応しいコレクションである。中里は、コレクション毎にインスピレーションを求めて旅をする。本コレクションのために選んだ旅路はサハラ砂漠の東部、遥か昔は海の底だったという白砂漠だ。そこで中里は、数千万年という壮大な時の流れと共に宇宙規模の物語を体感したのだ。 さらに、旅の途中、中里を乗せた車はアクシデントにより遭難し、Wi-FiもGPSもないまま、真夜中の砂漠を車で何時間も走り続けた。何時間も車上で揺られ続け、隙間から入り込む土埃にまみれながら、中里の旅は果てしない想像の世界にまで及んだ―そこで、大地の下に巨大なナマズが棲むという日本の神話が頭に浮かんだという。タイトルに冠した単語「fade」には 、風化するという意味がある。記憶の風化や物質の風化という、何かが徐々に消えていく様を表す言葉だ。砂漠を彷徨った際に中里は、自らの内に消えては顕れる記憶や空想と現実が入り混じるなかで、ここは未来の東京なのかもしれない、とふと想像した。今日の気候変動が当たり前の日常の環境を風化させ、ときには一変させてしまう様を目の当たりにすると、それは、あながち架空の話とも言い切れないだろう。
